These tariffs target imports from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland. Tariffs are traditionally designed to protect domestic manufacturers or respond to unfair trade practices; however, in this situation, they are tied to a demand by the U. S. regarding Greenlandโ€™s political status and authority, leading to a wide range of condemnation throughout Europe and the world.

The tariff will remain imposed until โ€ such time as a purchase agreement is executed for the total, complete and final purchase of Greenlandโ€, according to his postings on various forms of social media sites. Tariffs related to Trumpโ€™s request to purchase Greenland, an autonomous region in Denmark with geopolitical relevance in the Arctic.

Additionally, there are high-technology weapons systems (i.e. cybersecurity and missile defense systems), which are critical for the potential for the United States to create a โ€œGolden Domeโ€ above Greenland, regardless, that if the United States were to acquire Greenland, it would be able to guarantee the development and use of the โ€œGolden Domeโ€ as part of itโ€™s Global Peace and Security efforts to accomplish geopolitical goals through the use of economic coercion and tariffs.

Punishment of those states that oppose U.S. Goals

The eight countries that implemented tariffs against the U.S. have diplomatically and/or politically opposed the U.S. on its goals for Greenland through military cooperation within the NATO framework and have been punished through these tariffs. Critics view these tariffs as a form of Blackmail to be coerced into negotiating with the U.S. over the future of Greenland, rather than a legitimate tool of trade policy.
