Rome (Agencies): Argentine President Javier Miley has been granted Italian citizenship during a state visit to Rome. The citizenship was officially bestowed upon him by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who fast-tracked the procedure. Miley, who has Italian roots, was eligible for citizenship due to his grandparents emigrating to Argentina in the early 20th century.
During the visit, Meloni and Miley warmly greeted each other at the government residence, where Meloni handed Miley a document confirming his new citizenship. Miley, who has previously stated that he is 75% Italian, expressed his gratitude for the recognition of his heritage.
The decision to grant citizenship to Miley has drawn criticism from the left-wing opposition in Italy. Critics argue that the fast-tracked citizenship for Miley contrasts with the lengthy process faced by migrant children born in Italy, who must wait until they turn 18 to apply for citizenship. Opposition politicians have accused Meloni of a selective approach in granting citizenship.
Despite the controversy, Miley’s sister Karina, who serves as General Secretary of the Argentine Presidency, also received Italian citizenship. The move has sparked a debate on citizenship policies and the treatment of migrant children in Italy.
