Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States on Monday, making history as only the second president to be elected to non-consecutive terms. In his inaugural address, Trump laid out his ambitious vision for an American “golden age,” touching on a wide range of issues from energy independence and immigration reform to ending wars and colonizing Mars.
Here are the key takeaways from his speech:

  • ‘Golden Age of America’

Trump declared the beginning of a new era, stating, “The golden age of America begins right now.” He promised that the US would soon be “greater, stronger, and far more exceptional than ever before.” He described the past four years as a period of “betrayals” by a “radical and corrupt establishment” and proclaimed his inauguration day as “Liberation Day.” Trump emphasized that his executive actions would mark “the complete restoration of America and the revolution of common sense.”

  • Immigration Emergency

Trump announced an immediate halt to “all illegal entry” into the US across the southern border. He reinstated his policy of making asylum seekers wait in Mexico, ended the practice of releasing illegal entrants into the US, and initiated the deportation of “millions and millions of criminal aliens” back to their countries of origin. He also designated Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations and vowed to pursue foreign criminal gangs under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798.

  • ‘Drill, Baby, Drill’

Trump argued that the US is sitting on vast natural resources that can ensure energy independence and global power. He declared a national energy emergency, allowing new drilling for oil and gas, and abolished the “green new deal” proposed by the Democrats. “We will export American energy all over the world. We will be a rich nation again, and it is that liquid gold under our feet that will help to do it,” he said.

  • Tariffs and Taxes

Trump announced his intention to make the US “a manufacturing nation once again.” He vowed to overhaul trade policy to protect American workers and established the External Revenue Service to collect tariffs and duties on imports. “Instead of taxing our citizens to enrich other countries, we will tariff and tax foreign countries to enrich our citizens,” he stated.

  • The Big Gender Question

Trump announced the end of the policy of “trying to socially engineer race and gender into every aspect of public and private life.” He declared that as of Monday, the US government policy is that “there are only two genders – male and female.” He emphasized the creation of a “color blind and merit-based” society, rejecting “radical political theories and social experiments.”

  • Wars Not Fought

Trump vowed to build “the strongest military the world has ever seen” so the US can “reclaim its rightful place as the greatest, most powerful, most respected nation on Earth.” He emphasized his intention to be a unifier and a peacemaker, stating, “We will measure our success not only by the battles we win, but also by the wars that we end, and perhaps most importantly, the wars we never get into.”

  • Gulf of Mexico and Panama Canal

Trump announced that the US would seek to regain control of the Panama Canal from Panama, accusing the country of violating the 1977 treaty by working with China. He also declared that the Gulf of Mexico would be renamed the Gulf of America and that the highest peak in North America would once again be known as Mount McKinley, after the 25th president.

  • US Flag on Mars

Towards the end of his address, Trump called for Americans to “once again act with courage, vigor, and the vitality of history’s greatest civilization.” He argued that the US needs to behave as a “growing nation” that expands territory as well as wealth. “We will pursue our manifest destiny into the stars, launching American astronauts to plant the Stars and Stripes on the planet Mars,” he announced, referencing the doctrine of continental expansion and Elon Musk’s ambition to settle another planet.
