Toronto, Canada (Agencies): A coalition of Canada’s major news outlets, including Torstar, Postmedia, The Globe and Mail, The Canadian Press, and CBC/Radio-Canada, has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

The lawsuit alleges that OpenAI breached copyright and online terms of use by using news stories to train its AI models, such as ChatGPT. The media companies are seeking punitive damages, a share of any profits made from using their content, and an injunction to prevent OpenAI from using their articles in the future.

The plaintiffs argue that OpenAI’s actions are illegal and that journalism is in the public interest, while using it for commercial gain is not. OpenAI has responded by stating that its models are trained on publicly available data and that it collaborates closely with news publishers.

This lawsuit is part of a broader trend of legal challenges against OpenAI and other tech companies over the use of copyrighted material to train AI systems.
