Niagara Falls (Agencies): A vehicle explosion at the Rainbow Bridge tollbooth crossing into the US from Canada in Niagara Falls has resulted in the closure of four border crossings between Canada and western New York state. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, claimed two lives.
Initial reports suggested the possibility of an attempted terrorist attack, but New York Governor Kathy Hochul later stated, “Based on what we know at this moment, there is no sign of terrorist activity in this crash.”
Although there were earlier reports of explosives in the vehicle attempting to enter the border officer building, subsequent information indicated that no secondary explosive or device was found after a preliminary investigation. The FBI’s Buffalo Field Office is investigating the incident as a “vehicle explosion” in collaboration with local law enforcement.
While witnesses recounted that the car sped in the wrong direction into the border crossing’s inspection booths and exploded, a 27-year-old man was taken to Niagara Falls Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, and one border officer sustained injuries. The situation is still evolving, and authorities are working to determine the cause of the blast.
