Copenhagen (Agencies): Denmark has announced plans to acquire several hundred sea mines to strengthen the defense of its territorial waters and block key maritime straits, reviving Cold War-era defense capabilities amid growing regional security concerns.
The Danish Ministry of Defence has not disclosed the supplier, but defense analysts suggest Finnish company FORCIT Defence is a likely candidate. FORCIT is known for its state-of-the-art sea mines, including the BLOCKER and FLOUNDER models, which feature advanced target detection systems and high-explosive warheads designed to deter and disable enemy vessels.
The move aligns with Denmark’s commitment to NATO’s regional defense strategy, particularly in the Baltic Sea, where tensions have escalated in recent years. The acquisition will enhance Denmark’s ability to control critical waterways and reinforce maritime security in coordination with allied forces.
In a related development, Danish firm SH Defence, along with Finland’s DA-Group and FORCIT Defence, signed a Memorandum of Understanding in 2023 to develop a modular mine-laying system. This initiative aims to integrate new-generation naval mines into flexible deployment platforms, allowing for rapid defensive measures when needed.
