Luxor, Egypt (agencies): An international marathon kicked off in Egypt on Friday, with the participation of 430 runners from 45 countries worldwide.
The 32nd Egypt International Marathon began in the ancient city of Luxor in southern Egypt, starting from the historic Temple of Hatshepsut on the west bank of the River Nile, an ancient historical site dating back some 3,500 years to the age of the pharaohs.
“The Egypt International Marathon is one of the most significant events on the annual tourism calendar of the governorate,” said Hesham Abu Zeid, Luxor’s deputy governor, at the event.
The marathon is one of the oldest sport contests in the Middle East and Africa and is considered one of the main activities to attract more tourism to the ancient city.
