Accra (Agencies): President Nana Akufo-Addo commissioned the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Ezinlibo in the Western Region on December 23rd, 2024. This strategically located base is expected to enhance the navy’s capacity to combat piracy, illegal fishing, and other security threats in the Gulf of Guinea. The base can accommodate more than 1,000 personnel and is ideally situated near the border with Côte d’Ivoire, providing protection for Ghana’s offshore oilfields.
On the same day, President Akufo-Addo also commissioned a new naval vessel, GNS Achimota (P 46), at Sekondi Naval Base. Although described as the largest ship built in Ghana, the vessel was actually acquired from Japan and arrived on December 21st after completing the Ghana Navy’s longest voyage. The ship will be used for fisheries protection and training.
This development marks a significant step in Ghana’s efforts to modernize its navy and enhance maritime security in the region.
