Boulder, Colorado (Agencies): A dramatic head-on collision between two cargo trains in Boulder has raised fears of a fuel leak contaminating a nearby creek. The crash occurred around 10:43 PM on Thursday, involving a train reportedly belonging to Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF).
Stunning aerial footage shows the aftermath, with the trains crumpled across the tracks. Both conductors were hospitalized with minor injuries but have since been released.
Officials reported that fuel began leaking into the creek, prompting warnings for locals to avoid the area. However, the leaks are not expected to cause severe damage. Power outages affected 92 households, lasting several hours into Friday morning.
The Boulder Police Department announced that the crash site will be closed for several days, with BNSF taking over the response. BNSF’s director of communications, Kendall Sloan, assured that there is no threat to the public and that crews are working to clear the incident safely.
The property damage appears to be limited to the trains and surrounding trees, with no significant impact on the area. The potential for fuel to leak into the creek was largely mitigated by sand spilled from one of the cars.
