London (Agencies): Several members of the House of Lords have urged for the expansion of the AUKUS alliance to include Canada, Japan, and South Korea. During a recent debate, the Lords discussed amendments to the UK-US Mutual Defence Agreement (MDA) and highlighted the strategic importance of broadening the trilateral security partnership between the United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia.

Lord Goldsmith led the discussion, emphasizing the need for enhanced cooperation in nuclear defense and parliamentary scrutiny. The proposed expansion aims to create a broader, democratic alliance to counterbalance rival models from authoritarian states. Lord Hannan and Lord Bilimoria both supported the idea, noting that it would reinforce international security and deepen technological and economic ties among allies.

The debate also touched on the potential economic benefits for the UK’s defense industries, with many members highlighting the opportunities for highly skilled jobs and manufacturing.
