NEW DELHI (Agencies): The Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) is in advanced negotiations with Bengaluru-based electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Pravaig to procure a fleet of electric light tactical vehicles, known as Veer. This agreement is poised to support the Indian Army’s evolving need for eco-friendly and high-performance vehicles with electric propulsion systems, marking a significant step toward modernization and sustainability in military transport.
According to a Pravaig spokesperson, the negotiations are in the “final stages,” with the company also in talks with two states to establish a dedicated facility for high-volume production. The Veer EV has undergone modifications to suit the specific operational needs of the Indian Army, having commenced military trials in June 2024. With just a few minor adjustments recommended, the vehicle has been approved for use by the Army. A hybrid variant of the Veer, featuring a petrol range extender in addition to its electric battery, is under development and expected to be completed by mid-2025.
The Veer EV is a cutting-edge electric tactical all-terrain vehicle (E-TATV) designed with performance and durability in mind. Equipped with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, the Veer delivers 408 horsepower and 620 Nm of torque, ensuring exceptional off-road capabilities. The vehicle boasts a range of over 500 kilometers on a single charge, with fast-charging capabilities that allow for an 80% charge in just 30 minutes. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 210 km/h.
One of the vehicle’s notable features is its robust design, tailored for challenging terrains. With a ground clearance of 234 mm and a water-wading capacity of up to 900 mm, the Veer is built to perform under harsh conditions. The open-top design is versatile, with the option for both open and closed cabins, depending on mission requirements.
The Veer has received recognition for its innovation, winning the Prime Minister’s Award for Innovation for Defence Excellence (iDEX) on March 11, 2025. The vehicle’s role in the Indian military’s modernization plan reflects the country’s increasing focus on sustainable and advanced defense technologies. The hybrid variant, expected to enter production in mid-2025, will further expand the vehicle’s capabilities, with the contract finalization expected to trigger mass production.
As India looks to bolster its defense capabilities with modern, environmentally friendly technologies, the Veer EV represents a significant leap forward in military transport, aligning with both operational and ecological goals.
