BAGHDAD (Agencies): Iraq has officially purchased eight M-SAM-II air and ballistic missile defense systems from South Korea in a deal valued at $2.6 billion.
This acquisition marks a significant step in bolstering Iraq’s air defense capabilities.
The M-SAM-II, also known as the “Korean Patriot,” is designed to intercept and destroy incoming aircraft and ballistic missiles.

Key features of the M-SAM-II include:
- Advanced Radar Systems: Capable of detecting and tracking multiple targets at long ranges.
- Hit-to-Kill Technology: Ensures the destruction of incoming threats by direct collision.
- High Mobility: The system is mounted on mobile platforms, allowing for rapid deployment and repositioning.
- Integrated Command and Control: Provides real-time data and coordination for effective defense operations.
This purchase is part of Iraq’s broader strategy to modernize its military and enhance its defense infrastructure.
The deal follows a series of high-level meetings between Iraqi and South Korean officials, highlighting the growing defense cooperation between the two nations.
