Nowshera (By Shahid Ali Tareen): Wildlife Conservation Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm at Manglot Wildlife Park, Nizampur, where 20 young scholars and wildlife conservation enthusiasts from various universities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa participated in the event.

This inspiring activity was part of the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program in Pakistan (Global UGRAD-Pakistan), supported by the U.S. Department of State with funding from the U.S. Government and implemented by IREX.

The event was led by Muhammad Furqan Khattak, a Global UGRAD Pakistan alumnus, who organized the initiative under the Community Development Initiative (CDI) through a small grant. The primary goal of this effort was to raise environmental awareness among youth and engage them in meaningful conservation actions.

SDFO Tariq Wazir warmly welcomed the participants, while the Wildlife Department staff, including Deputy Ranger Fazle Haq and Niazmeen Khan, graciously facilitated and actively participated in the activities. Their guidance and hospitality made the day an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

Dr. Romaan Hayat Khattak, a distinguished wildlife expert, delivered an insightful session during the event. Despite not feeling well for several days, Dr. Romaan demonstrated immense dedication as he shared his extensive international research and experience. He highlighted critical aspects of wildlife conservation, large mammal population dynamics, and improving captive breeding programs for endangered species.

Participants explored different sections of the park and observed conservation measures up close. A guided trek through the park’s pristine wilderness allowed them to experience the breathtaking flora and fauna of the region. As part of the event, participants also planted trees, symbolizing their gratitude and appreciation for the Nizampur community. This gesture aimed to give back to the region and reinforce the importance of environmental stewardship.

These activities were further enriched by meaningful interactions with local residents, fostering a deeper understanding of the relationship between communities and conservation efforts.

One of the participants shared their thoughts, saying: “The hospitality of the Wildlife Department staff and the exploration of Manglot Wildlife Park have deeply inspired us to play an active role in nature conservation.”

Expressing his gratitude, Muhammad Furqan Khattak stated: “This was a collective effort, and the interest of participants, the guidance of Dr. Romaan, and the unwavering support of the Wildlife Department made it a success. I am especially thankful to SDFO Tariq Wazir, Deputy Ranger Fazle Haq, and Niazmeen Khan for their invaluable assistance.”

The event included a tree plantation drive, educational discussions, and efforts to raise awareness about the conservation of Pakistan’s wildlife and ecosystems. Participants, comprising young scholars and enthusiasts from various universities across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, left as ambassadors of nature, committed to continuing this mission within their communities.

Furqan Khattak further added: “This activity, part of the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program in Pakistan, supported by the U.S. Department of State and implemented by IREX, provided us with opportunities to drive meaningful change. Together, we can ensure a sustainable future for our fragile ecosystems.”
