PESHAWAR: University Town Residents on Monday hailed the government’s action of closing all types of commercial activities on the premises of University Town Peshawar and said that they fully back and commend the district administration’s action against those who are running commercial activities in University Town. Addressing a press conference, a group of residents of the University Town Peshawar headed by Dr Khushnood Ali Baz, accompanied by Muhammad Masoom Shah Advocate, Dr. Sulaiman Durrani, Dr Majid Khan, and many more said that they were totally against commercial activities on the premises of University Town as it is against the law.
“We hail the government and the district administration for the timely action against those who are bent upon launching as well as carrying out commercial activities which include running of private schools, clinics, offices, guest houses, and restaurants despite the decision of the High Court against such activities” Dr Khusnood Ali Baz said
The University Town, once a posh area of the provincial metropolis, has badly been damaged by these commercial activities, though a larger bench of Peshawar High Court (PHC) constituted by the then chief justice of the high court, had declared the legislation of the Provincial Assembly declaring the University Town commercial, against the constitution and Ultra vires in 2020 and banned all kind of commercial activities in University Town. He informed that before the decision of the apex court, those carrying on commercial activities had the option to convert their businesses to commercial by paying a conversion tax but not a single person opted for that option. Since the decision of the High Court which was announced on 30th of November 2020, those conducting commercial activities had ample time to move their businesses out of UT. Unfortunately, time passed, and owners of various businesses turned a deaf ear to the court directives.

Thus, the District Administration acting upon the decision of the High Court, launched a crack-down against such elements, which is welcomed by the residents of University Town whose life had been made miserable by these activities.
There have been huge bomb blasts in the University which damaged many houses around them.
“We are totally behind the government and the district administration. We need a clean and peaceful environment which is denied to us by those carrying out businesses on the premises of University Town,” Dr Khusnood Ali Baz said. Adding that they would never support commercial activities at University Town and vowed to fight a legal battle for their rights. We, the Town residents have never resorted to violence and never taken law into our own hands.
