Karachi (Khyber Mail): The Aga Khan University (AKU) marked a decade of excellence in surgical innovation and patient care with its 10th Annual Surgical Conference, held under the theme “Beyond the Scalpel: Quality Care and Patient Safety.” The two-day event brought together renowned international and national experts to discuss groundbreaking advancements in surgical practices and explore strategies for improving patient outcomes.

The conference featured global specialists from institutions such as the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin. They engaged attendees through interactive sessions on topics ranging from cutting-edge surgical technologies to patient-centered care. Discussions also delved into leadership perspectives on implementing quality initiatives, the role of accredited bodies in healthcare, and innovative strategies for decarbonizing healthcare centers.

Dr. Saleem Islam, Chair of the Department of Surgery at AKU, emphasized the event’s significance, stating, “This year’s theme reflects our commitment to providing cutting-edge, high-quality patient care. The conference not only benefits our patients but also enhances the education of our students and residents by sharing the latest research in surgery.”

A major highlight of the event was the introduction of AKU’s in-house development of 3D-printed PEEK (Polyetheretherketone) implants by its biomedical engineers. These innovative implants, designed for procedures such as cranial reconstructions and maxillofacial surgeries, offer customized solutions that are lighter, stronger, and more compatible with the human body, reducing infection risks and improving long-term patient outcomes. AKU plans to expand the use of these implants to other surgical domains, exemplifying its dedication to advancing healthcare technology.

The conference also explored broader challenges, such as the intersection of climate and healthcare, the role of collaboration in driving medical innovation, and maintaining quality within private healthcare systems.

AKU’s pioneering contributions and its emphasis on education, research, and innovation were underscored throughout the conference. The insights shared are expected to inspire transformative changes in surgical care, reaffirming AKU’s role as a leader in shaping the future of healthcare in Pakistan and beyond.
