Islamabad (Khyber Mail): During a discussion at the Institute of Regional Studies (IRS) on ‘CPEC: An Appraisal,’ renowned columnist and author Zahid Hussain stressed the necessity for Pakistan to meet Chinese economic expectations regarding the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) with a robust and consistent policy response.
Mr. Hussain emphasized the importance of fostering the existing synergy between the two nations. He highlighted the need to enhance the skills of the Pakistani workforce to support high-quality development in the second phase of CPEC. He noted that the recent signing of 27 new projects related to Special Industrial Zones (SIZs), agriculture, tourism, and other mutually beneficial initiatives is set to significantly strengthen commercial ties between China and Pakistan, ushering in a new era of cooperation in South Asia.
Reflecting on Phase 1 of CPEC, Mr. Hussain acknowledged its slow progress but pointed out the crucial role of several infrastructure projects initiated during this phase in driving Pakistan’s economic growth. He also emphasized the need to address the shortcomings of Phase 1 to fully capitalize on the potential of Phase 2.
Ambassador Jauhar Saleem, President of IRS, also spoke at the event, highlighting the critical importance of timely completion of CPEC projects. He asserted that this would greatly enhance the strategic cooperative partnership between Pakistan and China. Ambassador Saleem emphasized the multi-dimensional cooperation facilitated by CPEC, which enhances trade, industrial collaboration, and regional connectivity. He called for a fresh approach to leverage China’s rapidly growing economy and appreciated China’s supportive role during challenging times.
