Islamabad (Agencies): The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in partnership with the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) and with the support of the Embassy of Denmark in Islamabad, has launched the project ‘Strengthening Pakistan’s Response to Effectively Prevent the Spread of Violent Extremism Virtually and Amongst Youth in Vulnerable Communities (SPREE)’ with a football match at Islamabad Model College for Boys (IMCB) H-9.

The project aims to bolster regional stability and improve the rule of law in Pakistan, particularly among youth. Under the theme “Play for Peace,” the event demonstrated the power of sports to foster peace and tolerance, crucial in developing a sportsman spirit that helps children understand the importance of the rule of law.

The opening ceremony was graced by Danish Ambassador Jakob Linulf, UNODC Country Representative Troels Vester, and DG NACTA Saleha Zakir Shah. Ambassador Linulf emphasized Denmark’s belief in the power of youth to drive positive change and reaffirmed Denmark’s friendship with Pakistan. He praised NACTA and UNODC’s efforts in peacebuilding.

UNODC’s Troels Vester highlighted the agency’s role in strengthening Pakistan’s ability to prevent violent extremism, especially among vulnerable communities and youth. He emphasized that initiatives like this provide spaces for young people to engage in constructive community-building activities.

DG NACTA Saleha Zakir Shah reiterated NACTA’s commitment to preventing violent extremism and emphasized the importance of social cohesion through youth engagement. She highlighted that sports have the magnetic power to connect youth and urged them to adopt sportsmanship to promote tolerance and coexistence.

The event began with the national anthem, setting the tone for a day of unity and pride. Players from both teams, the spirited Blues and the determined Whites, were introduced to the crowd amidst cheers. The football field of IMCB H-9 became a stage for unity, hope, and a brighter future.

The match was intense, divided into two halves of 30 minutes each. Both teams showcased skill, determination, and sportsmanship. The Whites scored the first goal in the initial 10 minutes, igniting jubilation among their supporters. Despite the Blues’ valiant efforts, the match culminated in a nail-biting shootout, with the Whites claiming victory with a score of 1-0.
