Islamabad (Khyber Mail): The Centre for Strategic Perspectives at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) hosted a high-level roundtable discussion on “Pakistan-U.S. Relations,” featuring a delegation from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), including Senior Vice President Daniel Runde and Senior Associate Ambassador Robin Raphel. The event brought together policymakers, academics, think-tank experts, and researchers to discuss the evolving dynamics of the bilateral relationship.

In his opening remarks, Ambassador Sohail Mahmood, Director General of ISSI, emphasized the historical significance of CSIS as a prominent U.S. think tank and underscored the importance of the visit, which coincided with the conclusion of U.S. elections and the transition to a new administration in January 2025. Ambassador Mahmood highlighted the cyclical nature of Pakistan-U.S. relations, characterized by phases of engagement and estrangement, and called for a shift towards long-term stability and diversification of ties.

He stressed the need for enhanced economic cooperation, particularly in areas such as energy, IT, and climate change, to build a more well-rounded relationship beyond the traditional security focus. Ambassador Mahmood also pointed out the impact of Afghanistan’s instability and the U.S.-India strategic partnership on Pakistan-U.S. relations, advocating for a broader evaluation in light of global shifts, including U.S.-China competition and emerging multipolar trends.

The interactive discussion explored avenues to deepen bilateral ties. Participants emphasized the importance of moving beyond a security-centric narrative to foster a more comprehensive partnership. They highlighted Pakistan’s strategic significance, citing its demographic potential, geostrategic location, nuclear capabilities, and role in the Islamic world and the Global South.

New areas of collaboration were identified, including trade, IT, education, energy cooperation, agriculture, water management, health, and climate change. Participants noted that unlocking Pakistan’s economic potential could positively shape the trajectory of bilateral relations.

The dialogue reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to a multi-dimensional foreign policy that prioritizes stable and cooperative ties with the United States.

In his closing remarks, Ambassador Khalid Mahmood, Chairman of the Board of Governors at ISSI, presented souvenirs to the guest speakers, expressing gratitude for their insights and contributions to the discourse.

The event underscored the importance of sustained dialogue and imaginative strategies in charting the future course of Pakistan-U.S. relations.
