Islamabad (Khyber Mail): A recent seminar held at the Institute of Regional Studies (IRS) commemorated the resolution for Jammu & Kashmir’s accession to Pakistan in July 1947. Notable figures from Azad Jammu & Kashmir and Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) participated, including Senator Zarqa Suharwardy Taimur, Sheikh Abdul Mateen, and Altaf Hussain Wani. The speakers emphasized the enduring significance of Kashmir’s symbolic accession to Pakistan and the ongoing struggle in IIOJK for the right of self-determination.
Ambassador Jauhar Saleem highlighted how India’s illegal occupation of Jammu and Kashmir has hindered peace and development in South Asia. Resolving the Jammu & Kashmir dispute according to UNSC resolutions is crucial, as Kashmiris cannot be indefinitely denied their right to self-determination.
Sheikh Mateen provided historical context, citing a 1947 resolution where Kashmiris expressed their desire to accede to Pakistan. Altaf Wani praised the foresightedness of the Muslim Conference’s leadership in making that decision.
During the seminar, a Kashmiri woman from Srinagar described the grim reality of life in Indian-held Jammu Kashmir, contrasting it with the rosy picture painted by Indian media. She highlighted widespread suppression, including incarceration, rape, and subjugation faced by millions of Kashmiris.
Journalist Farukh Pitafi noted that Kashmiris find peace and freedom in Pakistan, while in IIOJK, they suffer under severe oppression. He believes that eventually, India will have to relent and implement the UNSC resolutions.
