Islamabad (Khyber Mail): The Executive Engineer (EXN) of the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), Sohaib Abbasi, has issued a three-day ultimatum to halt all water sports activities at Khanpur Dam, citing concerns over water contamination.
In a directive issued on Thursday, jetty owners were instructed to cease operations and remove all jets and boats from the dam’s reservoir by the end of the deadline. The decision follows complaints of water pollution caused by sports activities and litter left by participants.
Sohaib Abbasi stressed that the measure is crucial to protecting the dam’s water quality, which supplies residents of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. “This action is necessary to prevent further pollution and ensure a continuous supply of clean and safe water,” Abbasi stated.
The notice highlighted the importance of safeguarding the dam’s ecosystem and emphasized compliance from jetty owners to maintain public health standards. Khanpur Dam is a vital source of water for the twin cities, and protecting its environment has been deemed a top priority.
Local authorities are monitoring the situation to ensure adherence to the directive, with further steps expected to address long-term environmental concerns at the site.
