KOHAT (Khyber Mail): The Department of Zoology at Kohat University of Science and Technology (KUST) recently organized an international seminar titled “One Health Approach: Challenges and Opportunities.” The event featured renowned scientists and experts from the UK, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan, who discussed the latest scientific advancements and interdisciplinary collaborations in the field of One Health.

Prominent international speakers, including Professor Georgios Giamas (UK), Professor Naseebullah Kakar (Germany), and Dr. Bilal Aslam (Saudi Arabia), joined the seminar virtually. They shared their insights on modern scientific concepts of the One Health Approach. Professor Dr. Zabta Khan Shinwari, Vice Chancellor of Federal Urdu University of Science and Technology, delivered a keynote address emphasizing the interconnectedness of human health, animal welfare, and environmental balance. He highlighted the need for harmonized research and policy-making across various sectors to address global health challenges effectively.

Adding to the discourse, Professor Dr. Irfan Yousaf, Dean of Agriculture University Rawalpindi, elaborated on the practical aspects and global implications of the One Health Approach.

The seminar proceedings also included the inauguration of the OGDCL Pollinator (Honey Bee) Friendly Miyawaki Garden by Professor Dr. Zabta Khan Shinwari, KUST Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Muhammad Naseeruddin, and Assistant Commissioner Kohat Nimra Owais. This initiative, introduced for the first time in Pakistan, aims to promote biodiversity conservation and environmental sustainability.

Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Muhammad Naseeruddin praised the successful organization of the seminar and congratulated Dr. Syed Ishtiaq Anjum, Chairman of the Department of Zoology; Chief Organizer Dr. Kaleemullah Marwat; and their team for their dedication and hard work. He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to fostering academic and research-oriented programs in the future.

Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences, Professor Muhammad Jamil, expressed gratitude to all esteemed guests and termed the seminar a milestone event for KUST.

The seminar saw enthusiastic participation from students and faculty members of KUST and various institutions, including Bannu University, Lakki Marwat University, Karak University, Postgraduate College Kohat, and Degree Colleges from Lachi and Gambat.

The event successfully underscored the importance of a collaborative and holistic approach to health and environmental sustainability, reinforcing KUST’s role as a hub for scientific dialogue and innovation.
