KARACHI (Agencies): The Turkish Consulate General in Karachi, in collaboration with the Yunus Emre Institute, organized an event titled “Love for Turkiye in Pakistan in the context of Hassan Ali Effendi.”

The event celebrated the legacy of Hassan Ali Effendi, the first Consul General of the Ottoman Empire in Sindh and the founder of Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU). Effendi’s contributions to modern education in Sindh and the historic cultural ties between Turkiye and Pakistan were highlighted.

The program began with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by a welcome speech from Cemal Sangu, the Consul General of Turkiye. Sangu emphasized Effendi’s role in strengthening the bond between Turkiye and Pakistan, especially in education and cultural exchange.

Prominent scholars and intellectuals enriched the event with their speeches. Prof. Dr. Halil Toker from Istanbul University discussed the historical ties between Pakistan and Turkiye in Urdu, complemented by a pictorial survey from his book “Journey of Friendship and Brotherhood.” He also spoke about the origins of the Turkish nation and their presence in the subcontinent before the establishment of the Mughal Empire.

Dr. Fatima Hassan, a lecturer at Karachi University, shared her reflections on the literary and historical significance of the Pakistan-Turkiye relationship through her poetry, highlighting the cultural and heritage ties between the two nations.

Prof. Dr. Uzma Farman, Head of the Urdu Department at Karachi University, elaborated on the deep-rooted cultural connections between Pakistan and Turkiye, emphasizing the influence of figures like Hassan Ali Effendi. She discussed the importance of the Urdu language in establishing Pakistan and its connections with the Turkish nation.

Prof. Dr. Nigar Sajjad explored the shared history of Pakistan and Turkiye through a religious and historical lens, highlighting the ancient links between various Turkish dynasties and the Ottoman Empire’s diplomatic efforts, including Sultan Abdulhamid II’s policy of Pan-Islamism.

SMIU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mujeeb Uddin Sahrai Memon praised Effendi’s role in symbolizing brotherhood between Pakistan and Turkiye. He also mentioned the discovery of an authentic biography of Effendi by Mirza Kaleech Baig in Sindhi, which is being translated into English.
