Islamabad (Khyber Mail): In a significant legislative move, the Pakistan Army Act, 1952, has been amended to include two new sections, 55B and 55C, which extend the jurisdiction of the Act over retired veterans indefinitely. This amendment means that even decades after retirement, veterans can be subjected to summary disposal or court-martial.
The amendment has introduced stringent measures to address electronic crimes and the spreading of hatred against the army. Under the new provisions, both serving and retired servicemen found guilty of intentionally defaming, ridiculing, or undermining the army will face severe penalties under Pakistan’s electronic crimes laws, including the Pakistan Electronic Crimes Act. Additionally, those found spreading hatred against the army or related institutions will be liable for fines and imprisonment for up to two years.
These changes aim to uphold the integrity and discipline of the armed forces, ensuring that both current and former servicemen adhere to the standards expected of them. The amendment has sparked discussions on its implications for retired military personnel and their freedom of expression.
