Islamabad (Khyber Mail): During a discussion organized by the Institute of Regional Studies (IRS), Ambassador Zamir Akram, advisor to the Strategic Plans Division, highlighted Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to maintaining credible deterrence. He emphasized the evolving nature of deterrence in light of advancing technologies and stressed the importance of preserving its credibility to ensure lasting peace.
Ambassador Akram reflected on the origins of conflicts between India and Pakistan, attributing them to India’s hegemonic policies since 1947. He explained that Pakistan’s security measures, including the acquisition of nuclear capability, were necessary responses to India’s aggressive ambitions. This credible deterrent has effectively prevented New Delhi from initiating wars on several occasions.
Ambassador Jauhar Saleem, President of IRS, expressed concerns over India’s development and acquisition of advanced weapons, which he believes is fueling an arms race and undermining the strategic stability needed for peace in South Asia. He warned that India’s ultra-nationalistic approach is increasing mistrust among nuclear states, negatively impacting the region’s fragile strategic environment.
During a lively Q&A session, Ambassador Akram elaborated on Indo-US cooperation, noting that India, with US support, is adopting a more aggressive stance. He cited the Balakot incident and the revocation of Articles 370 and 35A in IIOJK as examples. In response to India’s belligerent approach, Pakistan has adopted a Full Spectrum Deterrence (FSD) strategy to ensure credible deterrence between the two states.
Ambassador Akram also emphasized the importance of avoiding miscalculations in South Asia’s sensitive security environment. He reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to maintaining credible deterrence, which is essential for upholding peace in the region. This commitment includes embracing education in science and technology to keep pace with the latest advancements.
