ISLAMABAD (Agencies) – Pakistan Railways (PR) has announced plans to construct a 105-kilometer railway line that will connect the Thar Coal mines to Port Qasim, aiming to enhance coal transportation and support key industries across the country. The project, which is expected to be completed by October 2025, is set to provide a more cost-effective and reliable method of transporting coal from Thar to critical sectors like cement and textiles.
According to an official from the Ministry of Railways, the construction contract has already been awarded, with the project being a joint venture financed by both the Sindh and federal governments. The rail link will play a significant role in boosting Pakistan’s bulk transportation capabilities, aligning with the nation’s broader economic growth objectives.
The new railway line, extending from Islamkot to Chhor, will include an 18-kilometer double-line track and a 24.58-kilometer loop-line, designed to handle significant freight volumes. Additionally, 4.20 kilometers of loop-lines will be added between Bin Qasim railway station and Port Qasim. The project will introduce seven new railway stations along the route, including two major stations at the Thar coal mines and Chhor, along with five intermediate stations to facilitate the smooth and efficient transportation of coal.
Once operational, the rail network is expected to have the capacity to transport up to 10 million tons of coal annually. This will help reduce Pakistan’s reliance on imported coal for power generation by tapping into domestic coal resources, thereby promoting energy security and reducing costs for industries.
The development of this rail link is expected to significantly enhance the economic potential of the Thar region, which is home to one of the world’s largest coal reserves.
