Islamabad (Khyber Mail): Ulrika Sundberg, the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Special Envoy to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue, met with Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Law & Justice and Human Rights, in Islamabad. The dialogue focused on safeguarding minority rights, enhancing digital safety, and fostering interfaith harmony.

Sundberg commended Pakistan’s strides in inclusive education, particularly the success of the recent International Conference on Girls’ Education in Muslim Communities. She praised Pakistan’s progressive policies aimed at empowering future generations and improving access to quality education for girls.

Senator Tarar reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to minority rights, enshrined in Articles 20–36 of the Constitution. He highlighted the National Commission for Minorities’ (NCM) efforts in safeguarding these rights, promoting interfaith harmony, and ensuring minorities’ participation in national development.

To address the misuse of laws, including the Blasphemy Law, Tarar outlined the government’s initiative to implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for forensic investigations, witness protection, and impartial legal processes.

Discussions also touched on enhancing online safety, with Pakistan sharing measures like public awareness campaigns and digital literacy programs to combat cyberbullying and child exploitation. The Minister emphasized collaborations with global stakeholders, such as Meta, in deploying tools like the TakeItDown portal for reporting and removing harmful online content.

Provincial governments have also been working to protect minority worship places, introducing enhanced security protocols and dedicated mechanisms as part of their responsibilities under the 18th Amendment.

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to advancing human rights, fostering interfaith harmony, and creating safer digital spaces, particularly for vulnerable groups.
