Rawalpindi (Khyber Mail): The Pakistan National Heart Association (PANAH) has called on the youth to take a leading role in combating the surge of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the country, which account for nearly 60% of deaths nationwide.

Speaking at a youth sensitization session at Women’s University Rawalpindi, PANAH’s Technical Advisor and former Commissioner of Income Tax, Abdul Hafeez, emphasized the dangers posed by ultra-processed products (UPPs) that are high in sugar, salt, and trans fats. Hafeez revealed alarming statistics, noting that over 41% of adults in Pakistan are overweight or obese, and more than 33 million are living with diabetes – a figure projected to rise to 62 million by 2045 if immediate action is not taken.

Hafeez urged the government to increase taxes on unhealthy food products and introduce front-of-pack warning labels to inform consumers about harmful ingredients. He stressed that PANAH has been actively working since 1984 to protect citizens from NCDs and is now focusing on mobilizing a youth-driven force across universities to promote policy changes and healthier lifestyles.

The session marked a critical step in involving young people in the fight against unhealthy dietary habits and fostering a healthier future for Pakistan.
