ISLAMABAD (Khyber Mail): The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) has unveiled the detailed results of the 7th Population and Housing Census-2023.
According to the census data, the total population of Pakistan stands at 241.49 million, with males making up 51.48 percent and females 48.51 percent, resulting in a gender ratio of 106.12. The average number of family members in Pakistan is 6.30, and Islam is the dominant religion, representing 96 percent of the population.
The age-wise breakdown of the population reveals that 36.47 million are under five years old, 97.53 million are under 15 years, 62.58 million are between 15 to 29 years, and 190.27 million are below 40 years of age. Literacy indicators show that 61 percent of Pakistan’s population aged ten years and above is literate.
The census data also highlights a population growth rate of 2.55 percent, the highest in the region. If this rate continues, the country’s population is projected to double by 2050. This rapid population growth is negatively impacting per capita income and the standard of living, underscoring the need for an effective population control strategy to ensure better resource distribution and economic prosperity.
Addressing the launching ceremony as the chief guest in Islamabad, Ahsan Iqbal emphasized the transparency ensured in the country’s first-ever digital census through the use of technology. He praised the efforts of PBS, SUPARCO, security forces, and field staff for the successful conduct of the census.
