PESHAWAR: A Center of Excellence in Micro Small Hydro Technology will be set up at the U.S. Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies Energy (USPCAS-E) UET Peshawar to strengthen the local manufacturing and standards of quality testing of mini-micro hydro technology in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The MoU, in this respect, was signed by Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organization (PEDO), Hydro Power Plant (HPP) France, and USPCAS-E Energy here today. The documents were duly endorsed by Prof Dr. Iftikhar Hussain, Vice Chancellor UET Peshawar, Dr. Kamil Tarar, Office Pakistan Representative HPP France, and Mr. Qazi Muhammad Naeem, Chief Executive Officer PEDO at the commencement of the International Conference on “Sustainable Energy Technologies”, organized by the USPCAS-E UET Peshawar, here today.
Despite the enormous potential of hydropower in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa the main barrier to developing micro and small hydro projects is the lack of technical expertise of international standards to manufacture hydro turbines in Pakistan. The MoU is aimed to establish the Center of Excellence in Micro Small Hydro Technology through the technical and financial assistance of PEDO and HPP France, respectively to resolve the pressing issue of the energy crisis in Pakistan. As part of the MoU, HPP France will also conduct training of professionals in micro and small hydro turbine manufacturing and provide European standard micro and small hydro technologies. Through this Center, it is expected that the potential of hydro and small hydropower will enhance with time. Prof. Dr. Sahar Noor, Dean, Faculty of Mechanical, Prof. Dr. Amjad Ullah, Dean, Faculty of Electrical, Prof. Dr. Khizar Azam Khan, Registrar, Dr. Adnan Dawood, Director USPCAS-E, Dr. Nasru Minallah, Director ORIC, officials from PEDO and HPP France were also present on the occasion.
