Peshawar (Khyber Mail): The National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (NEECA), in collaboration with the Building Energy Research Center (BERC) at UET Peshawar, has officially launched the Energy Conservation Building Code 2023 (ECBC-2023) in Karachi. The initiative marks a major step toward addressing Pakistan’s energy challenges and combating climate change by promoting energy-efficient construction practices.

The ECBC-2023 sets rigorous standards to reduce energy consumption in buildings by up to 30%, offering significant economic and environmental benefits. Sindh’s Minister for Energy, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah Rizvi, lauded the launch as a pivotal moment for sustainable urban development. “This positions Sindh as a leader in energy efficiency and sets a benchmark for other provinces to follow,” he said. Rizvi emphasized that the initiative aligns with Pakistan’s broader goals of enhancing energy efficiency and building climate resilience, paving the way for a greener future.

Dr. Sardar Mohazzam, Managing Director of NEECA, highlighted the transformative potential of the new code. “ECBC-2023 will be a game-changer for Pakistan’s energy landscape. By integrating energy efficiency into urban planning and construction, we are ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come,” he stated.

Echoing this sentiment, Syed Imtiaz Ali Shah, Managing Director of SEECA, emphasized the importance of stakeholder collaboration in ensuring the Code’s success. “With the support of all stakeholders, this initiative will transform how we build—ensuring energy savings, environmental protection, and economic growth for Sindh and the nation,” he remarked.

During the launch event, Mr. Zeeshanullah, Director of Buildings at NEECA, provided an in-depth overview of the Code’s framework, while Dr. Naveed Ahmed from BERC introduced compliance tools and software to facilitate adherence. Mr. Irshad Khan, Project Director at GIZ, commended the collaborative effort that made the initiative possible.

The introduction of ECBC-2023 reflects Pakistan’s commitment to fostering sustainable development and reducing the environmental impact of the construction sector. As the Code is implemented across Sindh, it is expected to inspire similar energy-saving initiatives throughout the country.
