ISLAMABAD (Agencies): In a landmark decision, the Pakistan Government has approved the promotion of Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir to the rank of Field Marshal, recognizing his exceptional leadership and strategic expertise during Operation Buny?n Murs?s.
The decision was announced during a Federal Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, who praised General Munir’s bold leadership in guiding the Pakistan Army to a decisive victory against a recent military aggression. The operation successfully thwarted external threats, ensuring Pakistan’s security and sovereignty.
On the night of May 6 and 7, 2025, India launched an unprovoked attack against Pakistan, targeting civilian areas. The Federal Cabinet strongly condemned the assault, calling it a blatant violation of international law. It lauded General Munir for his courage and decisive military response, leading Pakistan to secure a strategic victory.
Following unanimous approval of General Munir’s promotion, Prime Minister Shehbaz met President Asif Ali Zardari to discuss the development.
- A Rare Military Honor
Field Marshal is the highest honorary rank in the army, awarded for extraordinary military leadership. The title does not grant additional constitutional authority but remains a symbol of strategic excellence. General Munir is only the second officer in Pakistan’s history to receive the rank, following President Ayub Khan in 1959.
Having joined the Pakistan Army through the Mangla Officers Training School, General Munir has held key positions, including Director-General of Military Intelligence, ISI Chief, and Commander of the Gujranwala Corps. In November 2022, he became the 17th Chief of Army Staff.
- Further Military Honors
The government has also extended the tenure of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu in recognition of his service. Additionally, officers, soldiers, and civilians who played key roles during Operation Buny?n Murs?s will be honored with top state awards for their contributions.
This historic promotion marks a significant moment in Pakistan’s military history, reinforcing General Munir’s legacy as a leader of resilience and strategic mastery.
