Islamabad, Pakistan (Khyber Mail): In a major boost to its military capabilities, Pakistan has acknowledged signing a $5 billion defense agreement with China, securing KJ-500 Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft, 40 J-35A fifth-generation stealth fighter jets, and the HQ-19 missile defense system. The deal underscores the strengthening military cooperation between the two nations amid evolving regional security dynamics.
- Advanced Military Assets Acquired

The KJ-500 AEW&C aircraft is a third-generation airborne early warning and control system developed by China’s Shaanxi Aircraft Corporation. It is based on the Y-9 airframe and serves as a modernized replacement for older AEW&C models. Equipped with three AESA radar arrays for 360-degree coverage, the aircraft enhances Pakistan’s aerial combat capabilities by supporting long-range air-to-air missile operations. With a detection range of approximately 470 km against fighter-sized targets and an endurance of 12 hours, the KJ-500 will significantly improve Pakistan’s air surveillance and battlefield coordination.

The HQ-19 missile defense system is a highly advanced anti-ballistic missile (ABM) and anti-satellite (ASAT) system designed to counter medium-range ballistic missiles. Similar to the U.S. THAAD system, the HQ-19 has an operational range of 3,000 km and a flight altitude of 200 km. It employs radar and infrared tracking with Type 610A radar, capable of detecting targets up to 4,000 km away. The system is expected to replace older air defense mechanisms and significantly enhance Pakistan’s ability to intercept long-range threats.

The J-35A stealth fighter jets represent a major leap forward in Pakistan’s air capabilities. Developed by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, the J-35A is a twin-engine, single-seat multirole fighter featuring low radar observability, advanced avionics, and precision strike capabilities. It is equipped with an Electro-Optical Targeting System (EOTS) and a Diverterless Supersonic Inlet (DSI) for enhanced aerodynamics. China has reportedly offered Pakistan a 50% discount on the deal, along with lenient payment terms, further solidifying their military partnership. Pakistani pilots have already begun training in China to operate the J-35A, ensuring a smooth transition into the Pakistan Air Force (PAF).
- Delivery Timeline and Strategic Implications
Pakistan is set to receive its first batch of J-35A stealth fighters in the coming months, with deliveries expected to be completed by early 2026. The KJ-500 AEW&C aircraft and HQ-19 missile defense system are also expected to arrive within the same timeframe. The deal is widely seen as a direct response to India’s growing military activity, particularly its recent clash with Pakistan which resulted in destruction of several indian assests including Rafales, Su-30Mki, Mig-29 and Mirage 2000 and S-400 missile systems. This clash brought both the countries to a brink of nucler war only to be stopped by President Trump personal interfrance.
Experts predict a shift in regional power dynamics, with Pakistan poised to enhance its aerial combat and defense capabilities. The swift execution of this agreement highlights China’s commitment to strengthening defense ties with Pakistan, reinforcing their strategic alliance in the region. As Pakistan integrates these cutting-edge military assets, its deterrence and operational readiness are expected to reach new heights in the coming years.
