Islamabad (Khyber Mail): In a bid to strengthen its tactical airlift capability, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) has inducted six decommissioned Belgian C-130 aircraft, with the final three arriving in Pakistan through Ankara, Turkey. This move is part of PAF’s 10-year modernization plan launched after the 2019 Balakot air strikes, which highlighted vulnerabilities in Pakistan’s air defense and offensive response capabilities.

Facing strained relations with the United States, Pakistan turned to Belgium for additional aircraft to supplement its existing fleet of 16 C-130s. The newly acquired C-130H Hercules aircraft, retired by Belgium in 2021 and replaced with Airbus A400M Atlas planes, are expected to enhance PAF’s logistical and operational reach.

The versatile C-130s, known for tactical airlift operations, allow the transport of troops and equipment to forward areas using unpaved runways. These aircraft join the PAF’s upgraded C-130B and C-130E variants, modernized between 2014 and 2017. However, it remains unclear if the Belgian aircraft will undergo similar avionics upgrades.

The PAF’s modernization plan, launched in 2020, aims to replace aging platforms, enhance area denial capabilities, integrate drones into combat missions, expand airlift capacity, and develop offensive wings. The acquisition of Chinese J-10CE and JF-17C fighters, alongside the anticipated purchase of 40 FC-31 Gyrfalcon jets, underscores Pakistan’s intent to modernize its air fleet.

To improve situational awareness, the PAF recently inducted Saab 2000 Erieye airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft, boosting its fleet to nine. These AEW&C platforms were pivotal during the 2019 Operation Swift Retort, providing real-time battlefield intelligence against Indian air assets.

Additionally, the PAF is expanding its drone capabilities, incorporating Turkish Bayraktar Akinci drones and exploring manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) concepts. Reports suggest the development of a 2-4 ton “loyal wingman” UCAV to accompany next-generation fighters in high-risk environments.

Despite economic challenges, the PAF remains committed to modernizing its fleet to counter regional threats and enhance strategic operational capabilities.
