Seoul (Agencies): Samsung Electronics has announced the sudden passing of its co-CEO Han Jong-Hee, who died of cardiac arrest on Tuesday at the age of 63. The South Korean tech giant described Han as a visionary leader who made significant contributions to its global success.

Han had been leading Samsung’s consumer electronics and mobile devices divisions since 2022, a period during which he also served as vice chairman of the company. His co-CEO, Jun Young-Hyun, who was appointed last week to oversee the semiconductor business, will now take over as Samsung’s sole CEO, according to a spokesperson.

In a heartfelt internal message, Samsung paid tribute to Han’s 37-year legacy, highlighting his instrumental role in establishing its TV business as a global leader. Under his leadership, Samsung navigated challenging market conditions and strengthened its position in the electronics and appliances sectors. “Our deepest condolences are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time,” the message stated.

Han joined Samsung in 1988 after graduating with a degree in electrical engineering from Inha University. He led the company’s display operation before overseeing the electronics and devices division. His leadership was pivotal in the development and rollout of Samsung’s LED TVs, solidifying the company’s reputation for technological innovation.

Samsung has faced growing challenges in recent years, particularly in its semiconductor business, which trails industry leader Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) in cutting-edge chip production. Han’s contributions, particularly in consumer electronics, helped the company maintain its competitive edge in a tough market.
