Seoul (Agencies): In a televised address on Thursday, South Korea’s acting president and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo announced his resignation, fueling widespread expectations of his candidacy in the upcoming June 3 snap presidential election. Han’s decision comes at a critical juncture for the nation, as he emphasized the need to address political divisions and foster cooperation.
Han stated, “Unless extreme politics are abandoned and the foundation for cooperation is established, division and conflict will be repeated no matter who will be in power.” He pledged to dedicate himself to serving South Korea both in the present and the future.
Following his resignation, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance Choi Sang-mok will assume the role of acting president. Han is expected to formally announce his presidential bid on Friday, positioning himself as a key contender for conservative voters.
Han’s popularity has surged since the removal of former President Yoon Suk-yeol over a controversial martial law imposition. A recent poll revealed Han’s support rate at 13%, surpassing other conservative candidates but trailing behind Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party, who leads with 42% support. The survey, conducted among 1,000 voters earlier this week, has a margin of error of ±3.1% with a 95% confidence level.
As the political landscape shifts, all eyes are on Han’s next move and its implications for South Korea’s future leadership.
