Washington, D.C. (Agencies): The United States Department of State has approved the sale of 16 additional AGM-158B/B-2 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles – Extended Range (JASSM-ERs) to Japan, with an estimated cost of $39 million. This approval follows a similar announcement in August 2023, when the U.S. approved the sale of 50 AGM-158B/B-2 missiles to Japan for $104 million.

The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) confirmed the new sale on January 15, noting that it includes additional items such as training missiles, containers, anti-jam GPS receivers, munitions support equipment, spare parts, and both classified and unclassified technical documentation. The package also covers personnel training, airlift and transportation support, and engineering and logistics assistance.

  • Strategic Significance

The AGM-158B/B-2 JASSM-ER is a stealth, precision-guided, air-launched missile capable of autonomous operations. With a range exceeding 1,000 kilometers, it provides significant stand-off capabilities. The enhanced B-2 variant includes a new wing assembly for extended range and improved performance.

While the initial batch of 50 missiles was intended primarily for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force’s (JASDF) Boeing (Mitsubishi) F-15J strike aircraft, the latest batch is expected to be integrated with Japan’s fifth-generation Lockheed Martin F-35A and F-35B fighters, which are currently on order.

  • Strengthening Defense Cooperation

The sale underscores the growing defense partnership between the U.S. and Japan, as Tokyo continues to bolster its military capabilities amid regional security concerns. The advanced missile systems will enhance Japan’s deterrence and defense posture, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region.

The deal also aligns with Japan’s recent efforts to modernize its military arsenal and strengthen its air and missile defense systems in response to evolving threats.

The U.S. has reiterated its commitment to supporting Japan’s defense needs through such agreements, highlighting the strategic importance of the alliance between the two nations in maintaining regional stability.
