Tashkent (Khyber Mail): Uzbekistan has officially nominated its candidacy for the Chair of the UN Tourism Commission for Europe (CEU) for the 2025-2027 term, marking a historic first for the country in global tourism leadership.
The nomination underscores Uzbekistan’s growing engagement in international tourism affairs and reflects the high level of trust it has earned within global tourism bodies. The UN Tourism Commission for Europe, comprising 41 member countries from Europe, Central Asia, and Western Asia, plays a key role in shaping tourism policy, fostering regional cooperation, and advancing sustainable and inclusive tourism development.
The 71st meeting of the Commission, scheduled for June 4-6, 2025, in Baku, Azerbaijan, will see elections take place for the Chairmanship. Uzbekistan’s candidacy is regarded as recognition of its ongoing tourism sector reforms, its practical efforts in strengthening regional cooperation, and its commitment to sustainable tourism growth.
If elected, Uzbekistan aims to introduce key initiatives, including:
- Positioning Central Asia as a unified tourism destination
- Developing cross-border travel routes
- Implementing digital solutions in tourism
- Enhancing regional dialogue within the framework of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO)
