However, rather than following the teleprompter, Gere deviated from his prepared remarks to express, โ€œI had a thought about something, actually, before I came out. I want to share it with you. Itโ€™s going to be short. I was really struck by the idea that there were one billion people watching this thing. Astonishingly, one billion people are watching. And I was curious about what countries this was actually going to. And it is in fact being seen in China right now.โ€

After that speech, the actor from โ€œPrimal Fearโ€ did not make a return to present at the Academy Awards until 20 years later, in 2013. However, he did participate in the ceremony in 2003 when his film โ€œChicagoโ€ was nominated for the โ€œBest Pictureโ€ award.
