DI KHAN (Agencies): Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police reported gunfire near vehicles within the convoy of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman in Dera Ismail Khan. However, the politician was not present during the incident.
District Police Officer (DPO) Rauf Kesrani stated that the vehicles went to the Yarak area for refueling when the firing occurred. He confirmed that Maulana Fazlur Rehman was not present at the time.
The incident follows recent warnings from the interior ministry regarding serious threats to the lives of Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Awami National Party provincial president Aimal Wali Khan.
JUI-F spokesperson Aslam Ghauri condemned the incident, labeling it a “cowardly act” and urging an immediate investigation. He questioned the apparent lack of action by security institutions despite continuous warnings about threats to their leadership.
In response to the attack, Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani phoned Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s son to express condemnation and offer prayers for the JUI-F chief’s well-being.
The interior ministry’s letter had cautioned provincial authorities about threats to Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Aimal Wali Khan, urging enhanced security measures at their residences and during public appearances. The JUI-F spokesperson mentioned that such threats were routine for their party leaders.
The incident adds to concerns about the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, prompting calls for a thorough investigation and heightened security for political leaders.
