Islamabad (Agencies): Ms. Romina Khurshid Alam, Member of the National Assembly/Special Assistant to the Prime Minister/Convener of the National Parliamentary Taskforce on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), has reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to fulfilling all SDGs despite challenges. She emphasized the urgent need for collective action to combat climate change and safeguard the planet for future generations.
Ms. Khurshid Alam made these remarks while representing Pakistan at the ‘Fourth Global Conference on Strengthening Synergies between the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development’ in New York.
During her speech, the Honorable Convener stressed the significance of collective efforts in addressing climate change. She highlighted the unanimous Resolution passed by the National Assembly on June 23, 2023, which acknowledged the support provided by the United Nations and its agencies in Pakistan’s fight against climate change. The resolution also called for climate justice and sufficient resources to tackle climate-induced challenges. Ms. Khurshid Alam urged conference participants to leverage their collective experiences and expertise to establish a consortium focused on disaster risk reduction strategies for the Asia-Pacific region.
In addition to the conference, the Honorable Convener will present Pakistan’s case at other prestigious forums organized at the United Nations. She aims to reaffirm Pakistan’s commitment to the SDGs during the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development. She will highlight the government’s policies focused on education, poverty reduction, gender equality, and inclusive economic growth, including initiatives such as the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme and the Prime Minister’s Youth Business & Agriculture Loan Scheme.
Furthermore, the Convener will participate in the high-level political forum organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), where discussions will revolve around the progress of SDGs and the role of National Parliaments in incorporating the global agenda into local legislation. The conference will also review the midpoint progress towards achieving the SDGs.
Alongside these conferences, the Honorable Convener is engaging in exclusive meetings on the sidelines. She recently met with H.E. Csaba K?rösi, President of the United Nations General Assembly, to provide an update on the work of the Parliamentary SDGs Secretariat. Additionally, a meeting is scheduled with the Undersecretary General of UNESCAP, where she will highlight the concrete steps taken by Pakistan to align its national policies with the 2030 Agenda.
Pakistan remains steadfast in its commitment to achieving the SDGs and creating a sustainable and prosperous future for its people. The efforts of the Convener and the National Parliamentary Taskforce on SDGs reflect the country’s determination to address global challenges and contribute to the well-being of the international community.
