MOSCOW (Agencies):The Russian Defense Ministry has officially reported the destruction of a Ukrainian ‘Senator’ armored personnel carrier (APC).
This marks the first time that a Canadian-manufactured wheeled APC has been hit by Russian forces.
The incident occurred during an attack on Kiev’s forces in the southern Donetsk People’s Republic and the Zaporozhye Region. Moscow’s troops successfully pushed back the Ukrainian forces, resulting in the loss of over 140 servicemen and several vehicles, including the Senator APC, a British-made FH-70 howitzer, and a US-made M198 artillery piece, within the past 24 hours.
The exact number of Senator vehicles currently in use by the Ukrainian military remains unclear. Media reports from late 2023 indicated that the Canadian Roshel arms manufacturer had supplied a total of 1,000 such APCs to Ukraine by that time. However, it remains uncertain whether Kiev received the regular version of the APC or the mine-resistant ambush-protected (MRAP) variant.
Roshel has promoted the ‘Senator’ as a “combat-proven platform” that has demonstrated its effectiveness in conflict zones. Some media outlets even claimed as far back as 2018 that the vehicle could “survive even an apocalypse.”
