KYIV (Agencies): Ukraine’s military has shot down a Russian military spy plane over the Sea of Azov, according to Army chief Gen Valerii Zaluzhny.
The A-50 long-range radar detection aircraft and an Il-22 air control center were destroyed in the attack.
The A-50 detects air defenses and coordinates targets for Russian jets.
The loss of an A-50 would be significant for Russia’s air force, according to prominent pro-war Russian commentators.
The Il-22 command center was reportedly hit by Russian “friendly fire” and managed to land back in Russia.
Ukrainian Air Force commander Mykola Oleshchuk commented on the downing of the aircraft in a Telegram post, but did not provide details.
